What Are the Differences Between a Pink Diamond and a White Diamond?

While both pink and white diamonds are valuable, there are many points of comparison that differentiate them, including:

Pink Diamonds Are Rarer

Pink diamonds are exceptionally rare, with less than 0.01% of all diamond carats mined as quality pink stones.

To put this into perspective, for every 10,000 carats of diamonds mined, only 1 carat might be a quality pink diamond. This extreme scarcity sets them apart from white diamonds, which are comparatively more common.

Why Pink Diamonds Cost More

The extreme rarity of pink diamonds directly impacts their price. A pink diamond can be approximately 100 times more expensive per carat than a white diamond of comparable size and quality.

This price difference can be even more pronounced for larger or more intensely coloured pink diamonds.

The Pink Diamond Colour Is A Mystery

The mystery behind diamonds’ pink colour is fascinating and still needs to be solved. Unlike white diamonds, whose chemical makeup determines the colour, pink diamonds get their colour from a different process.

It’s believed that intense pressure and heat deep within the Earth cause distortions in the diamond’s crystal structure, or related to the explosive journey diamonds make to the surface. These distortions change the way light is absorbed and reflected, resulting in that beautiful pink hue.

In essence, pink comes from tiny changes in the diamond’s structure rather than impurities like in other coloured diamonds. Scientists are still trying to pinpoint the exact atomic-level defects that cause this unique colour, which adds to the allure and rarity of pink diamonds.

They Are Difficult To Source

The Argyle Mine in Western Australia has been the primary source of pink diamonds, producing over 90% of the world’s supply. The mine’s closure in November 2020 has further increased the rarity and value of pink diamonds.

In contrast, white diamonds are found in various locations across the globe, including Russia, Canada, South Africa, and Botswana.

How To Check The Quality Of A Pink Diamond

To determine the quality of a pink diamond, we use a modified version of the traditional 4 Cs (Cut, Clarity, Carat, and Colour) used for white diamonds, with some additional considerations specific to coloured diamonds. Here’s how to assess the quality of a pink diamond:

Colour

Colour is the most crucial factor when evaluating pink diamonds. Their value is assessed based on three main criteria: intensity, hue, and evenness of distribution. Intensity ranges from Faint to Fancy Vivid (in the GIA system) or 1P to 9P (in the Argyle system), with deeper colours generally being more valuable.

Pure pink and purplish pink are the most sought-after hue, while the uniformity of colour distribution throughout the stone indicates higher quality.

Clarity

Clarity in pink diamonds is graded similarly to white diamonds, ranging from Flawless to Included. However, slight inclusions are more acceptable in pink diamonds than in colourless ones due to their rarity.

The unique colour and scarcity of pink diamonds often overshadow minor imperfections, making inclusions less significant in their overall evaluation.

Cut

The cut of a pink diamond should prioritise enhancing the stone’s colour intensity rather than maximising brilliance as with white diamonds. A well-cut pink diamond will showcase its unique hue to its fullest potential. Pink diamonds are often cut deeper and with thicker girdles to maximise the pink colour of the crystal.

Carat Weight

Carat weight is especially significant for pink diamonds, as larger stones are incredibly rare. As the size of a pink diamond increases, the per-carat price tends to rise dramatically.

The rarity and stunning colour of larger pink diamonds make them highly coveted and extremely valuable.

Additional Factors To Keep In Mind

Another factor to consider is fluorescence, which can sometimes enhance a pink diamond’s colour and origin. Stones from the now-closed Argyle mine often command a premium. A certification from a reputable source is also crucial for verifying the diamond’s quality and characteristics.

How To Care For A Pink Diamond

Caring for a pink diamond is similar to caring for other diamonds, but extra caution is advised due to their rarity and value. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Regular cleaning is essential to maintaining your pink diamond’s brilliance. To clean the stone gently, use a soft-bristled brush and a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth
  • Store your pink diamond jewellery separately from other pieces to prevent scratching. While diamonds are tough, they can still be chipped or scratched by other diamonds. A fabric-lined jewellery box with separate compartments is ideal.
  • Avoid exposing your pink diamond to harsh chemicals, including household cleaners and chlorine. These substances can potentially damage the metal setting or leave residue on the stone, dulling its appearance.
  • Remove your pink diamond jewellery before engaging in activities that might subject it to impact or abrasion, such as sports or heavy housework. While diamonds are durable, they’re not indestructible.
  • Have your pink diamond jewellery professionally inspected and cleaned annually. A jeweller can check for loose settings and signs of wear, ensuring your precious piece remains secure and in top condition.

Remember, proper care will help preserve the beauty and value of your pink diamond for generations to come.
